The Code of Virginia states that anyone licensed over two years must have a total of 16 hours of continuing education within a two-year cycle.  You must have 8-hours in the mandatory topics which include 3-hours in Ethics & Standards of Conduct, 2-hours in Fair Housing and the remaining 3 hours must be a minimum of 1 hour in each of the following categories:  Legal Updates, Real Estate Agency, and Real Estate Contracts.  The remaining 8-hours may be real estate related or in the mandatory topics. Brochure/Registration Form

(Day 1)                                                                                McCarthy_Jennifer 

8 AM Special Contracts & Seller Financing CE:  2 Hrs Contracts    PL: 2 Hr Real Estate Related

This course examines three types of real estate contracts (NVAR Contract for Land and VAR Contract for Unimproved Property,  Residential Lease and Option to Purchase, Contract for Deed) and which are different than standard sale agreement used for sales of existing residences and examines some issues involved in transactions involving seller financing.

10 AM  Selected Issues in Agency Law  CE:  1 Hr Agency    PL:  1 Hr Real Estate Related

This course covers goes over selected issues in the longer 3 hour agency class, hones in on the requirement of confidentiality  and issues relating to dual agency and professionalism.

 Instructor:  Jennifer McCarthy–  Jennifer McCarthy is a licensed attorney in the State of Virginia.  Jennifer received her Juris Doctor from Penn State, the Dickinson School of Law and her Bachelor of Arts from James Madison University.  Jennifer was born in Newport News, Virginia and raised in Prince William County, Virginia.  Since her departure from law school, Jennifer’s primary areas of practice have been commercial and residential real estate transactions, community associations, land use development, and title. Jennifer has put much time and dedication into the local area by working at the Prince William County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, located in Manassas, Virginia, in addition to her 5 year association with Walsh, Colucci, Lubeley, Emrich & Walsh, P.C., located in Woodbridge, Virginia.  She is also actively involved in various civic associations, including but not limited to the Northern Virginia Building Industry Association, Prince William County Association of Realtors, Prince William County Bar Association, Prince William County Regional Chamber of Commerce, Virginia Women Attorneys Association and the ViennaTysons Chamber of Commerce. 

  

Mozingo_Scott11 AM Legal Updates
CE:  1 Hr Legal Updates   PL:  1 Hr Real Estate Related 

This course addresses legal updates through current case law examples.  It will be covering new legislation for 2010.  Real Estate Professionals will be able to use this information as a useful guide when assisting their clients.

Instructor:  Scott Mozingo is an attorney with the title company of NRT Mid-Atlantic Title Services, LLC.  He graduated in 1996 magna cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a minor in Political Science.  He received the degree of J.D. from George Mason University School of Law in 2001 and became a member of the Virginia State Bar that year.  He concentrates his practice in all areas of residential real estate.  He is a member of the Prince William Association of Realtors, Education Committee.

Contracts can be daunting. Figuring out what each paragraph means and how it all interrelates is very important. Not understanding the contract can lead to legal problems for you as an agent. Your best protection is knowledge. Art Grace is sure to help you enhance your understanding and ability to communicate the element of the real estate contract. 

  Instructor:  Arthur Grace - Art was the recipient of PWAR’s Instructor of the Year Award for 2009.  He is a partner with the law firm of Grace Stuart PLC where his primary responsibility is to manage all aspects of MBH Settlement Group’s operations in Western Prince William and Fauquier Counties.  This includes but is not limited to real estate settlements and managing all related issues of real property law.  Art received his J.D. from the University of Richmond T.C. Williams School of Law and is a member of the Virginia Bar Association.

This course was designed by VAR to ensure that education on the Code of Ethics was consistent throughout the state.  It is critical to the harmony of the industry that all REALTORS® be taught a consistent code of ethics.  The Code provides a guide by which others may measure the professional conduct of REALTORS®.

Instructor:  Lee Odems Lee was PWAR’s President for 2009. He has been an active committee member on both the state and local level.  In addition to being a certified instructor of several real estate courses (ABR, SFR, Fair Housing, Ethics) he is also a VAR certified mediator. Lee has been in the Real Estate business since 1987 and is owner/broker of Buyers Advantage Real Estate Corp in Woodbridge. He holds his ABR and SFR Designations and is a retired Army Master Sergeant.  (January 19th class)

Peggy is licensed as an instructor for all Pre-Licensing Courses in Virginia 1996 to present.  She is a Certified Ethics Instructor for the last 12 years.  She is a member of the Hall of Fame of the Realtor® Association of Prince William.  She was named 1988 Manager of the Year by the Prince William Association of Realtors and in 1992 awarded the Prince William Association of Realtors Code of Ethics Award.  Peggy is a Top Producing Agent with over $170 Million in volume credited in past 10 yrs.

Morelli_Joe11 AM 10 Most Expensive Tax Mistakes  CE:  1 Hr Real Estate Related   PL:  1 Hr Real Estate Related 

By increasing the realtor/brokers knowledge of tax mistakes that they may be making we enable them to become more financially sound in their business practices thus saving them money and keeping them out of trouble with taxing agencies.  

This expanded knowledge will make them even more of an asset to their clients and the community to which they are selling because they will now have a stronger referral base in cases of clients with tax liens, short sales, bankruptcies or other general tax issues that need to be solved in order to bring more transactions to closing.

Instructor:  Joe Morelli - Joe established Morelli Financial Group in 1986 and has 20+ years experience in the tax and financial services field serving local Prince William county residents as well as clients worldwide in planning for their tax and financial future. Joe is an Enrolled Agent, a designation given by the Internal Revenue Service to practice and represent clients and taxpayers before the IRS. His forte is creating and managing tax and investment plans for maximizing the wealth of his clients while minimizing their tax liability.

This Fair Housing course provides general information regarding the most common types of fair housing violations and how they can be avoided.  After an overview of federal, state and local laws there will be discussion on what types of transactions these laws apply to and who is protected by these laws.

 Instructor:  Marc Wiltshire - Marc has been Counsel to RGS Title, LLC since joining the law firm of Shreves Schudel DeVol Saunders Jackson Clarke & Parello, PLLC in June 2006. The duties for this position have included the facilitation of resale transactions, new construction purchases, land acquisitions, refinances, and escrow reconciliations. Marc also oversees review of new contracts and ensures branch compliance with the same.  He is also a Virginia licensed Settlement Agent.  He received his J.D. from George Washington University School of Law.

CE:  1 Hr Real Estate Related   PL:  1 Hr Real Estate Related

This course will benefit the Realtor personally and professionally by educating them on the policies needed by clients who are purchasing rental properties. These policies provide protection for the investor to cover his property and his need for business liability. The goal is to assess the risks faced by investors and renters.

The Realtor will be able to provide an overview of coverage offered by Rental Dwelling/Rental Condo and Commercial Liability Umbrella Policies to their clients. The Realtor will additionally be able to provide advice on the need for renters to have their policies.

Instructor:  Edgar Setliff -  Ed is the President of Setliff Insurance Agency in Woodbridge.  He has been in the insurance industry since 1993 and currently is a licensed State Farm agent and offers home, life, auto insurance as well as mutual funds and a certified State Farm Bank.  He received his B.S. from Le Tourneau University in Longview, Texas and his MBA from Averett College in Danville, Va.
